Bunting

Bunting is a great tool in the game of softball. It helps move runners into scoring position, and or even to catch the defense off guard.

- How To Bunt
1. Make sure that you are standing in the front of the batters box. This lets the batter catch the ball before it starts to break.
2. Keep your feet shoulder width apart with your front foot positioned slightly back. This allows the batter to have a stable body position.
3. Turn on the balls of your feet positioning your body to where your chest is facing the pitcher. You should keep your knees bent with your back slightly forward, yet still in an athletic position.
4. Place your arms lightly bent in front of your body to where your hands are in the same plane as your eyes.
5. Your bottom hand should be placed towards the bottom of the bat around the knob. This hand determines the direction of the bunted ball. If you pull the knob of the bat towards your body, the ball will go more toward the third base line(for a right handed batter). If you pull the knob of the bat towards the pitcher, the ball will go more towards the first base line (for a right handed batter).
6. Keep your bat at a 45 degree angle with your bat head pointed slightly up. This allows the batter to bunt the ball on the ground, and not pop the bunt up.
7. When making contact with the ball, DO NOT stab your bat at it. Let the ball get close to you and in a since catch the ball with your bat. This will allow you to be more efficient, and have a soft bunt.

-Pitch Selection
1. When bunting you do not want to bunt a ball that is higher than your hands. Therefore, you would pull the bat back to your back shoulder, getting the bat out of the middle of the plate.
2. when going down to bunt the ball, bend at the knees not the waist.
